Maria Popova, whose invaluable site [Brain Pickings](http://www.brainpickings.org/?ref=drcraigcanapari.com) compiles fascinating and diverse material on books, the arts, and sciences, has written and excellent review of a book entitled [Internal Time: Chronotypes, Social Jet Lag, and Why You're So Tired](http://www.amazon.com/dp/0674065859/ref=as%5Fli%5Fss%5Ftil?tag=braipick-20&camp=0&creative=0&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=0674065859&adid=00VYH47YYT7P8T9S7QYN&ref=drcraigcanapari.com) by Till Roenneberg.

The book explains the clash between circadian (body clock) biology and school/work schedules, resulting in a persistent state of sleep deprivation the author calls "social jet lag." She summarizes the findings of the book [more elegantly than I can. ](http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2012/05/11/internal-time-till-roenneber/?ref=drcraigcanapari.com) You should go read this. She describes the physiologic shift in teenager's schedules to a later sleep schedule and how that clashes with earlier school start times. This results in many [sleepy teenagers](https://drcraigcanapari.com/2012/04/13/the-sleepy-teenager/) and significant health and school problems.
